"Poverty is just part of being humble and godly—wanting wealth is selfish and worldly."
How it sounds in your head: I hear at church that money is the root of evil and rich people can't enter heaven. Maybe God wants me poor to keep me humble. If I want nice things, am I being materialistic and ungodly?
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."
-- 3 John 1:2Religious lie twisting Scripture to make poverty a virtue, directly opposing God's covenant promise of abundance to His children.
You've heard this teaching your whole life and it sounds spiritual. Wanting to be comfortable feels guilty when you're told godliness means lack.
Abraham was called the father of faith and was also extremely wealthy—the verse says he was 'very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.' His wealth wasn't despite his faith but part of God's covenant blessing, and that same blessing is yours through Christ.
I REFUSE the lie that poverty is godliness. IT IS WRITTEN that God wants me to prosper in all things. Wealth is part of Abraham's blessing which is mine through Christ. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ redeemed me from the curse of poverty so I could walk in covenant abundance. The BARAK includes material blessing—God commanded blessing on my storehouses. I reject false humility that calls lack a virtue. My Father delights in my prosperity. I receive abundance without guilt because it's covenant inheritance, not worldly greed.
Your Father is clothing you in the finest robe and putting the family ring on your finger right now, not asking you to stay in poverty to prove your humility. He celebrates your abundance.
