"Pain is my punishment for something I did or didn't do."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe if I'd taken better care of myself. Maybe if I'd gone to the doctor sooner. Maybe God is teaching me something through this. What did I do to deserve this?
"Jesus answered, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.'"
-- John 9:3Religious teaching that suffering is divine discipline, combined with shame-based 'you reap what you sow' theology.
Guilt finds patterns where none exist. Religious teaching about 'God's lessons' through suffering creates false causation between sin and sickness.
Blind from birth, no sin mentioned or confessed, no 'getting right with God' required. Jesus spit on his eyes and touched him—IMMEDIATE sight restored, no questions asked about his past or worthiness.
I REFUSE the lie that my pain is punishment. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Jesus declared that sickness is not caused by sin but is an opportunity for God's works to be revealed. I am the righteousness of God in Christ—not because I'm perfect but because HE is. The punishment I deserved fell on Jesus 2,000 years ago. IT IS WRITTEN that by His stripes I was healed, past tense, finished at the cross. I receive healing as a gift, not a wage.
The Father isn't keeping score of your mistakes or withholding healing until you 'figure out what you did wrong.' He already dealt with every sin—past, present, future—at the cross, and He's running toward you NOW with healing in His hands, not a list of your failures.
