"The pain is my cross to bear—Jesus said take up your cross daily."
How it sounds in your head: Scripture says we all have a cross to bear. Maybe this chronic pain is mine. Jesus suffered; shouldn't I expect to suffer too? Embracing this pain might be my act of obedience and identification with Christ.
"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree')."
-- Galatians 3:13Religious misapplication of Luke 9:23, making 'cross' mean ongoing suffering rather than death to self-will, enemy using Jesus's words to justify bondage.
Surface reading of 'take up cross' sounds like embracing suffering. Christian culture romanticizes pain as spiritual maturity, creating false equation between cross-bearing and chronic illness.
Barabbas was guilty, condemned to crucifixion—his cross was built, waiting for him. Jesus took his place, bore his cross, died his death. Barabbas walked free—he didn't 'bear his cross,' Jesus bore it FOR him.
I REFUSE the lie that pain is my cross to bear. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ REDEEMED me from the curse, becoming a curse FOR me—He bore MY curse so I don't have to. Jesus already bore my griefs, carried my sorrows, and by HIS stripes I WAS healed. I am under the BARAK blessing where sickness is part of the curse Christ removed. IT IS WRITTEN in 1 Peter 2:24 that He 'bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we...might live.' My cross is surrender to His will, not acceptance of pain He already carried.
The Father isn't asking you to 'bear' what Jesus already bore—He's offering you what Jesus purchased: freedom from the curse, healing from pain, LIFE abundant. Like Barabbas who walked free because Jesus took his cross, you walk free because Jesus took yours.
