"Nobody can handle the real me; I have to keep parts of myself locked away forever."
How it sounds in your head: You've learned what's acceptable and what's not. Your real thoughts, your real struggles, your real questions would shock people. They love the version of you they think they know. If they saw the whole truth—the doubts, the anger, the darkness—they'd leave. So you perform, and the real you stays hidden.
"O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways."
-- Psalm 139:1-3Trauma-based belief that authentic self is unlovable, reinforced by religious environments that punish honesty and reward performance.
She's likely experienced rejection or judgment when she's been vulnerable before, so hiding feels like self-protection. She's also seen others get sidelined for honesty while performers get celebrated, so the lesson seems clear: authenticity is costly, performance is rewarded.
Thomas openly declared he wouldn't believe unless he saw Jesus and physically touched His wounds—public doubt, no filter, total skepticism after everyone else believed. Jesus didn't rebuke him or sideline him; He showed up specifically FOR Thomas, invited him to touch the wounds, and called him forward—instant inclusion despite vocal unbelief, no punishment for honesty.
I REFUSE the lie that nobody can handle the real me. IT IS WRITTEN God has searched me and known me completely—every thought, every doubt, every darkness—and He hasn't left. He is intimately acquainted with ALL my ways and still calls me BELOVED. IT IS WRITTEN I am accepted in the Beloved, not for my performance but for Christ's perfection. The real me is not too much for God and not too much for those He's assigned to my life. I was created for authentic connection, not polished performance. The BARAK blessing covered Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in their full dysfunction—how much MORE does Christ's blood cover me? I step out of hiding into LIGHT. I am FULLY KNOWN and FULLY LOVED.
Your Father isn't waiting for you to present an edited version of yourself—He's already seen the unedited footage and He's applauding. He met Thomas in his doubt, not after his doubt. He's meeting you in your mess, not after you clean it up.
