"My past sexual experiences will ruin my future marriage"
How it sounds in your head: You imagine your future wedding night and you're terrified that your past will somehow contaminate it. You think your future spouse deserves someone 'pure' and that you're bringing damaged goods to the table. Every message about marriage made it sound like sexual purity is the foundation, and you feel like you've already built on sand.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: purity culture's teaching that your virginity is a gift you give your spouse and if you've 'given it away' to someone else, you've stolen from your future marriage.
You've heard married people say things like 'I'm so glad we waited' with the implication that if you didn't wait, you'll always have regrets. The comparison trap makes you feel like a lesser option for your future spouse.
God told Hosea to marry Gomer who was a prostitute, and later when she went back to prostitution, God told Hosea to go BUY HER BACK and love her again. This wasn't a story about damaged goods ruining marriage - it was a picture of God's redemptive love. Gomer's past didn't disqualify her from being loved; it became the CANVAS for displaying covenant love.
I REFUSE the lie that my sexual past has contaminated my future marriage. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that I am a NEW CREATION in Christ - old things have PASSED AWAY, and ALL things have become new. My past doesn't travel with me into my new identity. IT IS WRITTEN in Jeremiah 29:11 that God has plans for me for a FUTURE and a HOPE - not plans limited by my history. The spouse God has for me isn't looking for perfect; they're looking for redeemed. I am washed, I am sanctified, I am justified by the blood of Jesus. The BARAK blessing made Abraham wealthy even after he LIED TWICE - my future isn't destroyed by my past because covenant covers it!
The Father isn't planning a second-class marriage for you because of your sexual past - He's preparing something beautiful where His redemption story gets to be front and center. Your future spouse won't be getting 'damaged goods'; they'll be getting a person who understands grace at a level that 'perfect' people never will.
