"My depression is the cross I have to carry—suffering makes me more like Jesus."
How it sounds in your head: I can barely get out of bed, can't remember what happiness feels like, and everything feels gray and pointless. Youth pastor says 'take up your cross,' and this must be mine. Maybe carrying this depression without complaining is how I prove I'm really a Christian. Maybe Jesus was depressed too—He was 'a man of sorrows,' right?
"To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified."
-- Isaiah 61:3Source: Religious glorification of suffering as sanctification, misapplying 'take up your cross' to mean enduring chronic mental illness.
The language of 'bearing your cross' and 'sharing in Christ's sufferings' makes depression feel like a holy assignment rather than an illness. Isaiah 53 calls Jesus 'a man of sorrows,' which sounds like depression, making it seem like sadness equals Christlikeness.
Elijah was so depressed he prayed to DIE, saying 'It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life.' Classic suicidal ideation from God's prophet. God didn't rebuke him or call it his 'cross'—He sent an angel with food, let him sleep, fed him again, and gave him supernatural strength to journey forty days. God TENDED his depression with rest and provision, not 'tough it out' theology.
I REFUSE the lie that depression is my spiritual cross to prove devotion. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus came to give BEAUTY for ashes, the OIL OF JOY for mourning, and a GARMENT OF PRAISE for the spirit of heaviness. He didn't come to help me endure sadness—He came to REPLACE it. Depression is not Christlikeness; it's the enemy stealing the abundant life Jesus died to give me. IT IS WRITTEN that He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). I am Abraham's seed, under the BARAK blessing, and Deuteronomy 28:47 says the CURSE includes 'not serving the Lord with JOY and gladness of heart'—therefore JOY is the BLESSING. I receive joy, hope, and restored mental health RIGHT NOW as my covenant right.
Your Father is not asking you to white-knuckle through depression to prove your love—He's the One who fed Elijah in his suicidal moment and gave him strength. He's not waiting for you to 'bear it well'; He already provided the oil of JOY to replace the heaviness, and He's aching to give it to you the moment you stop trying to earn it and just receive.
