"My chronic illness is who I am now—I'm a diabetic, a cancer survivor, forever defined by this diagnosis."
How it sounds in your head: When you introduce yourself, you add 'I'm a diabetic' or 'I'm a heart patient.' Your medical chart has become your identity card. The disease has swallowed your name, and everyone—including you—sees the condition before they see the man.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: Medical system language that turns conditions into identities, reducing people to diagnoses instead of covenant sons.
You've lived with this condition long enough that appointments, medications, and limitations structure your entire life. Every form, every conversation, every decision factors in 'your disease'—it feels inseparable from who you are.
She was called 'the woman with the issue of blood' for 12 years—her condition became her identity. One touch of Jesus and IMMEDIATELY the fountain of her blood dried up, and she was called 'Daughter'—identity restored from disease to family.
I REFUSE the lie that my illness defines me. My diagnosis is NOT my identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a new creation in Christ—old things passed away, ALL things became new. I am not 'a diabetic' or 'a patient'—I am a SON of the living God, seated with Christ, blessed with the BARAK blessing of Abraham. IT IS WRITTEN that by His stripes I WAS healed—past tense, finished work. Disease may touch my body, but it does NOT touch my identity. I am defined by the blood of Jesus, not by medical charts.
The Father doesn't see your diagnosis when He looks at you—He sees His son, whole and complete in Christ. While you're rehearsing your symptoms, He's running toward you with the robe of righteousness, calling you by your TRUE name—Beloved, Healed, Whole.
