"My business failed, so I'm a disappointment to my dad and family."
How it sounds in your head: Dad probably thinks I'm not cut out for this. Maybe he's right. I wanted to make him proud and now I just made him worry. He won't say it, but I know he's disappointed.
"The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."
-- Zephaniah 3:17Enemy + family: Your worth to them is based on your performance. Failure equals rejection.
He sees financial stress in the family and feels personally responsible. His provider identity is forming and this feels like failing his core masculine role.
He wasted his entire inheritance on prostitutes and came home broke and smelling like pigs. The father RAN to him, hugged him while he still stank, and threw a party - zero disappointment, total celebration.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm a disappointment to my family. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord rejoices over me with gladness and singing - my heavenly Father is singing over me, not sighing. The prodigal's father ran toward him while he still smelled like failure and threw a party, not a guilt trip. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus - none from God, none defining me. I am blessed, not because I performed, but because I'm covered by covenant. My family's opinion doesn't change God's opinion, and His opinion is that I'm worth singing about. The barak blessing on my life stands regardless of one failed venture.
The Father isn't disappointed - He's running toward you with a ring and robe ready. Like the prodigal who wasted everything, you get celebration, not lecture. He's been preparing the party.
