"My broken family is proof I failed as a mother and can't be trusted."
How it sounds in your head: My children are estranged, my daughter hasn't spoken to me in five years, my son's addiction, my grandchildren don't know me. I must have done something terribly wrong. Good mothers don't end up alone at seventy-four with fractured families.
"The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."
-- Ezekiel 18:20Source: Culture places impossible 'mother blame' on women, making you responsible for adult children's choices and holding you hostage to outcomes you cannot control.
Every Mother's Day is a knife, every family photo on Facebook shows what you don't have. You replay decades of parenting decisions wondering which one broke everything, carrying guilt for choices your children made.
God was the PERFECT parent to Adam and Eve—perfect environment, perfect provision, perfect presence—and they STILL chose rebellion. In Hosea, God laments over Israel: 'I taught them to walk, I healed them, I led them with cords of kindness'—yet they turned away. Perfect parenting doesn't guarantee perfect children.
I REFUSE the lie that my children's choices define my worth as a mother. IT IS WRITTEN that each person bears their own iniquity—I am not responsible for adult decisions I cannot control. Even GOD the Father had rebellious children despite perfect parenting. I release false guilt and mother-blame. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ—my identity is NOT tied to my children's current condition. I stand under the BARAK blessing that declares me BLESSED coming in and going out. I trust God is running toward my prodigals while I rest in His love for me. I am a GOOD mother because HE says so, not because outcomes are perfect.
The Father sees you as a beloved daughter, not a failed mother. He's holding your children in His hands with more love than you could ever manufacture, and He's whispering over you, 'Well done, faithful one—you did better than you think, and I'm finishing what you couldn't.'
