"My alcoholism and years of addiction mean I'll never be trusted again."
How it sounds in your head: I've been sober twelve years now at seventy-three, but my family still watches me at gatherings. They remember the drunk mother, the embarrassing scenes, the broken promises. I'm on permanent probation, eternally suspect.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: AA culture and religious legalism create permanent 'recovering' identity, making past addiction a life sentence of suspicion rather than a testimony of complete redemption.
You see it in their eyes—the quick glance when you reach for a glass, the careful monitoring, the 'Are you okay?' that really means 'Are you drinking again?' Twelve years sober but still not trusted.
Paul was a MURDERER who dragged Christians from their homes and oversaw their executions—his reputation was violent persecutor. Yet Acts 9:20 says 'IMMEDIATELY he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues'—no probation period, no trust-rebuilding timeline. The church that feared him came to trust him fully because his transformation was INSTANT and COMPLETE.
I REFUSE the lie that my past addiction defines my present identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW CREATION—the old alcoholic PASSED AWAY, the new woman has COME. I am NOT in 'recovery'—I am RECOVERED, REDEEMED, MADE NEW. IT IS WRITTEN that sin has NO DOMINION over me because I'm under grace. Paul murdered Christians and was immediately trusted; I am trusted by GOD even if people need time. The BARAK blessing that protected Abraham's lies and Jacob's deception covers my past completely. I walk in FREEDOM, not probation. I am TRUSTWORTHY because HIS righteousness is credited to me, and that's a PERMANENT STATUS, not a fragile sobriety counting days.
The Father isn't watching you nervously waiting for relapse—He's celebrating the daughter who walked out of Egypt and NEVER has to go back. He's already thrown out the old file with 'alcoholic' written on it and handed you a new one labeled 'BELOVED, FREE, WHOLE.'
