"Maybe God's plan for me doesn't include children—I need to surrender my desire."
How it sounds in your head: Everyone says 'God's plan is best' and 'surrender your will.' Maybe wanting a baby is selfish and you're supposed to be content without one. Maybe you're fighting God's actual plan by continuing to hope for something He never intended to give you.
"Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart."
-- Psalm 37:4Religious teaching that frames desire as rebellion and surrender as giving up what you want instead of trusting God will give it.
Well-meaning Christians keep telling you to 'let go and let God' and stop 'demanding' from Him. The language of surrender sounds spiritual and your continued longing sounds bratty.
The widow kept coming to the judge demanding justice—not quietly surrendering, but persistently asking until he gave her what she wanted. Jesus tells this story to teach us to always pray and not give up, not to teach us to stop wanting things.
I REFUSE the lie that godly surrender means killing my desires. IT IS WRITTEN that God gives me the desires of my heart when I delight in Him. My longing for children isn't selfish—it's designed. IT IS WRITTEN that Hannah poured out her soul in bitterness and God heard her. I will not call rebellion what God calls relationship. I am invited to ask, seek, knock until the door opens. The BARAK blessing includes being fruitful and multiplying. I am not demanding what isn't mine; I'm claiming what's promised. I am Abraham's seed, and God's covenant with him includes descendants as numerous as stars. My desire aligns with His promise.
The Father isn't waiting for you to stop wanting a baby before He gives you one. He's running toward you delighted that your heart wants what His promise offers, and He's not offended by your honest longing—He's moved by it, like He was with Hannah.
