"Love is something I'll deserve later when I'm older, prettier, godlier—but not now, not like this."
How it sounds in your head: I'm still too young, too awkward, too in-between to be fully loved. Maybe when I'm older and have it together, when I've grown into my looks and matured in my faith. But right now, in this messy middle-school skin, I'm just not there yet. Love is for the future version of me.
"The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: 'Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.'"
-- Jeremiah 31:3Enemy convincing her that love is earned by maturity/transformation + world's message that young girls are 'not there yet' + religious performance pressure.
She's in the most awkward phase of life—not a child, not yet a woman, growing unevenly in every direction. Adults dismiss her feelings as 'just a phase,' and she's internalized the message that her current self is a rough draft, not the real thing.
The youngest brother, overlooked and left in the field with the sheep when the prophet came looking for the next king—so insignificant his own father didn't bother to call him in. But God sent Samuel back to get him, and while he was still a TEENAGER, still a shepherd, still the forgotten youngest, God anointed him KING. Not later when he was ready—RIGHT THEN.
I REFUSE the lie that love is for a future version of me. IT IS WRITTEN that He has loved me with an EVERLASTING love—not 'will love' but HAS loved, present tense, right now. I don't have to wait to grow up, glow up, or get it together to be fully loved. His lovingkindness is drawing me NOW, not later. IT IS WRITTEN that before I was formed in the womb, He knew me—which means His love predates my existence and doesn't depend on my development. I am not a rough draft; I am His MASTERPIECE, fully loved at thirteen, fourteen, fifteen. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, not because I've arrived but because HE has. I am loved NOW. Fully. Completely. Forever.
The Father didn't tell the prodigal to go clean up in the barn first and come back when he was presentable. He grabbed him IMMEDIATELY, pig-stink and all, and called for the robe and the ring while the boy was still a MESS. He doesn't love the future polished version of you more; He loves THIS version—right now, exactly as you are—with the fullness of everlasting love.
