"I've lost my native language and betrayed my heritage"
How it sounds in your head: You used to dream in your mother tongue. Now you search for words that once flowed effortlessly. Your grandchildren never heard you speak it fluently. You feel like you've erased a part of yourself to survive here, and the guilt sits heavy at 76—like you've betrayed everyone who came before you.
"So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust."
-- Joel 2:25Enemy weaponizing cultural assimilation survival strategy to create shame over necessary adaptation
You literally can't speak to relatives back home as easily as you once could. You've forgotten words, mixed languages, lost fluency. The language loss is measurable and feels like losing a limb—and you did it to yourself to fit in.
Daniel was forcibly assimilated—given a Babylonian name, taught Babylonian language and literature, immersed in pagan culture. Yet he lost NONE of his true identity, and God gave him favor and influence in a foreign tongue without diminishing his covenant standing.
I REFUSE the lie that language loss equals identity loss or heritage betrayal. IT IS WRITTEN that God restores what the locust has eaten—what survival required me to set down, He treasures and redeems. My value isn't in fluency but in His delight. The BARAK blessing doesn't depend on which language I speak. IT IS WRITTEN that He gives back double for my former shame—every adaptation I made to survive, He counts as courage, and my identity in Him transcends vocabulary. I walk in the FULL blessing today, whole in Him regardless of which words I remember.
The Father isn't disappointed that you adapted to survive—He's been celebrating your resilience all along, and the language of His love has reached you in every tongue you've spoken. He's running toward you with restoration for what you thought was lost, whispering 'You did what you had to do, and I've loved you every moment.'
