"Intrusive thoughts mean I'm secretly evil and God knows I'm a fraud."

How it sounds in your head: The horrible images flash through your mind—violence, blasphemy, sexual perversion—and you're HORRIFIED. You didn't invite them, but they're there, and now you're spiraling. What kind of Christian has thoughts like this? You must be depraved, unregenerate, a wolf in sheep's clothing. God sees these thoughts and knows you're not really His.

Romans 7:19-20

"For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me."

-- Romans 7:19-20
Enemy whispers: These thoughts prove you're evil. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Romans 7:19-20 - 'For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.' PAUL—the apostle—distinguished between HIM and the sin-nature generating unwanted impulses. Intrusive thoughts you don't WANT and don't ACT ON are not YOU. They're the static of living in a fallen world with a brain the enemy can harass. Your HORROR at the thoughts proves they're NOT your heart. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says TAKE CAPTIVE thoughts—which implies they're INTRUDERS, not invited guests.
Quick Truth: LIE: Intrusive thoughts prove I'm evil. TRUTH: Paul had unwanted impulses too. They're not you. (Romans 7:19-20)

Religion taught you every thought is a moral event, making intrusive thoughts (a symptom of OCD/anxiety) evidence of hidden wickedness instead of neurological misfiring.

Why this feels true:

The thoughts feel so vivid and shocking that they MUST mean something about your true nature, right? You've heard 'as a man thinks in his heart, so is he,' weaponized to mean thoughts equal identity. The content is so disturbing you can't imagine a redeemed person experiencing it.

Matthew 16:22-23
Peter

Peter had the thought to rebuke Jesus about the cross—and Jesus said 'Get behind me, SATAN.' The thought came FROM the enemy, but Peter wasn't condemned for it. Jesus distinguished between Peter and the Satanic suggestion, rebuking the source, not the man.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that intrusive thoughts define me. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul himself experienced impulses he did NOT want and distinguished them from his true self. My intrusive thoughts are not evidence of secret evil—they're evidence of living in a broken world with neurobiology the enemy can harass. IT IS WRITTEN in Philippians 4:8 to think on good things—which is a COMMAND, not a description of automatic mental processes. If thoughts were always automatic reflections of my heart, there'd be no need to command what to think. I am not my intrusive thoughts. I am a NEW CREATION in Christ, BARAK-BLESSED, and my identity is in His blood, not my brain's misfires. My Father sees the HORROR I feel at these thoughts and calls THAT my true heart.

But God actually:

Your Father isn't recording your intrusive thoughts as evidence against you. He's distinguishing between YOU (His beloved) and the harassment (the enemy's tactic). The thoughts horrify you because you're NOT evil—and He already knows that.
