"I'm too particular about how I like things; I need to be more flexible and go with the flow."
How it sounds in your head: I like things a certain way, and people say I'm picky or difficult. I get upset when plans change suddenly. My family says I'm 'high maintenance' because I have preferences. Maybe I should just not care so much.
"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."
-- Proverbs 4:23Source: world that labels knowing what you want and having boundaries as being 'difficult' rather than self-aware.
Adults and peers have labeled her preferences as a problem, so she's learning to ignore her own needs and desires to avoid conflict or being seen as demanding.
Esther had very specific beauty preparations for twelve months and chose exactly what she wanted to bring before the king. She didn't 'go with the flow'—she was PARTICULAR about her presentation, and God used her precision to position her to save a nation.
I REFUSE the lie that having preferences makes me difficult! IT IS WRITTEN to guard my heart with diligence—paying attention to what I need is WISDOM, not pickiness! I am not high maintenance for knowing what I like and communicating it clearly. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 37:4 to delight in the Lord and He gives me the DESIRES of my heart—God GAVE me desires, and He doesn't shame me for having them! I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and my uniqueness includes specific preferences that don't need to be erased!
The Father doesn't want you to shrink your preferences to fit someone else's comfort. He made you with specific likes, specific needs, specific boundaries, and He's not asking you to erase them—He's asking you to trust that the right people will HONOR them, not resent them.
