"I'm too broken and messy right now. I need to get my life together first."
How it sounds in your head: Your marriage is struggling, your kid is a mess, you're on antidepressants, and you can't even keep your house clean. Who wants a friend project? You need to fix yourself before you're fit for friendship. Once you're healthier, more stable, more together—then you can reach out.
"And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him."
-- Luke 15:20Religion whispers: Clean yourself up before coming to the table—God and people help those who help themselves.
You don't want to be the disaster friend who dumps her problems on people. You imagine meeting someone for coffee and the floodgates opening—your whole messy life spilling out. Better to isolate until you have something to offer besides chaos.
Known prostitute crashed a Pharisee's dinner party, wept all over Jesus' feet, dried them with her hair—completely scandalous, utterly inappropriate, visibly broken. Jesus didn't say 'come back when you're respectable.' He said 'Your sins are FORGIVEN. Your FAITH has saved you. Go in PEACE.' Instant acceptance in the middle of the mess.
I REFUSE the lie that I must clean up before I can connect. IT IS WRITTEN: the father RAN to the prodigal while he STILL REEKED OF PIGS. I don't need to be fixed to be loved. The BARAK blessing doesn't wait for my stability—it protected MURDERERS and LIARS in their mess. IT IS WRITTEN: 'While we were STILL sinners, Christ died for us.' I am a branch in the Vine—I don't produce wholeness to earn connection; wholeness COMES from connection. I declare friendships that love me IN the process, not after I arrive. Come-as-you-are, pig-pen-to-party friendships manifesting NOW.
The Father isn't waiting for you to stabilize. He's running toward your mess RIGHT NOW with the robe and ring, and He's bringing friends who will sit in the chaos with you, not after you've cleaned it up.
