"I'm high maintenance. People tolerate me but secretly wish I required less."
How it sounds in your head: You sense the eye rolls when you have another need, another question, another request. Your wife's resigned tone when you need something. Your friends' hesitation before saying yes. You've become the needy guy everyone manages rather than enjoys.
"I drew them with gentle cords, with bands of love, and I was to them as those who take the yoke from their neck. I stooped and fed them."
-- Hosea 11:4Enemy accusation + performance-based relationships that condition love on being low-maintenance.
Marriage feels transactional—you try to need less to get more. Friendships feel fragile because you don't want to be 'that guy' who always needs something. You've started handling everything alone to avoid being a burden.
Elijah was DONE—suicidal, exhausted, demanding to die. He was the DEFINITION of high-maintenance in that moment. God's response? He didn't lecture him or tell him to get it together. He sent an angel with FOOD, let him sleep, then fed him AGAIN. Twice. Then gave him 40 days of strength from two meals.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm too high-maintenance for God or others. IT IS WRITTEN that He STOOPS to feed me, that He draws me with bands of LOVE, not obligation. My needs do not burden the Father; they give Him opportunity to display His abundance. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed in my storehouse—God commands blessing on everything I need. I walk in the BARAK blessing—the covenant that fed Elijah by ravens, that provided manna daily, that gave water from rocks. My God is not a grudging provider; He is a GENEROUS Father who gives seed to the sower and bread for food. I receive without apology.
The Father didn't wait for you to become low-maintenance before running to you. While you were STILL in the pig pen—needy, hungry, broken—He was already running with the robe, the ring, and the fatted calf. Your needs don't DRAIN Him; they DELIGHT Him because meeting them displays His abundance.
