"If I was really saved, I wouldn't struggle with depression and dark thoughts"
How it sounds in your head: Everyone at youth group seems fine. I'm the only one who feels this heavy darkness. If Jesus really lives in me, why do I wake up wishing I didn't? Maybe I'm not actually a Christian.
"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance."
-- Psalm 42:5Religion teaches that salvation equals instant mental perfection, ignoring that we live in fallen bodies with brain chemistry.
He sees other Christian guys posting happy worship selfies while he's barely holding it together. His brain tells him real Christians don't feel suicidal, so either he's faking faith or God rejected him.
Elijah just called fire from heaven and defeated 450 prophets, then immediately wanted to die and prayed for God to take his life. God didn't rebuke him or question his faith—He sent an angel with food and let him sleep.
I REFUSE the lie that depression disqualifies me from God's family. IT IS WRITTEN that even David's soul was cast down, yet God called him beloved. My mental struggle is NOT evidence of spiritual failure—it's evidence I live in a broken world with a physical brain affected by the fall. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. I am COMPLETELY righteous, FULLY loved, and PERMANENTLY sealed by the Holy Spirit—even on my darkest days. The BARAK blessing of Abraham is mine through Christ, which means God's favor covers me even when my brain lies to me.
The Father sees you in bed unable to move and He's not disappointed—He's running toward you with compassion like He had for Elijah. Your depression doesn't slow His sprint; His love isn't conditional on your serotonin levels.
