"If I set boundaries with my aging parents, I'm dishonoring them and violating Scripture."
How it sounds in your head: My mother calls six times a day, criticizes how I'm grandparenting, shows up unannounced, and makes me feel guilty for having my own life. But Exodus says 'honor your father and mother'—doesn't that mean I have to endure whatever she demands? If I set limits, am I sinning? She's eighty-seven. This is my last chance to get it right with her.
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."
-- Galatians 5:1Source: Religion weaponizing 'honor your parents' to keep adult daughters in emotional bondage and servitude.
The church has told her for sixty years that honoring parents means unlimited access and compliance. Her mother's age makes every boundary feel like cruelty, and the countdown to her mother's death creates panic that she'll regret not doing more.
Naomi told Ruth to go back to her mother and her gods—Ruth refused and set a boundary by choosing her own path. She honored Naomi by staying but didn't obey her command to leave, and God blessed her INSTANTLY by putting her in Boaz's field the very first day.
I REFUSE the lie that honoring my parents means surrendering my freedom. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ has made me FREE, and I will not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. I can honor my mother AND have boundaries—Jesus modeled this. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ, which means setting healthy limits doesn't make me a bad daughter. The BARAK blessing flows over me regardless of my mother's approval—it protected Jacob even when he DEFIED his father's wishes. I am free to love her from a place of wholeness instead of guilt. My identity is DAUGHTER OF THE KING, not slave to her demands.
The Father is whispering, 'I didn't set you free so you could build a new prison out of someone else's expectations. I've given you LIBERTY—walk in it without guilt, and watch how I honor you for honoring yourself.'
