"If I just had more self-control, I wouldn't binge eat or struggle with food."
How it sounds in your head: The secret eating, the drive-through runs you hide, the empty containers you bury in the trash - it all screams that you're weak and undisciplined. If you were stronger, you'd just stop. Other people manage their eating; why can't you?
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."
-- Galatians 5:22-23Religion teaching self-control as the fruit YOU produce, rather than the fruit of the SPIRIT when you abide.
Every diet she's tried says willpower is the answer, and every failure reinforces that she doesn't have enough. The Christian weight-loss programs add God-language to the same shame: pray harder, try harder, white-knuckle it in Jesus' name.
The woman was drawing water from the well over and over, trying to satisfy a thirst that kept returning - five husbands and still empty. Jesus didn't shame her lack of control; He offered LIVING WATER that would satisfy her PERMANENTLY, springing up from WITHIN - provision from connection, not striving.
I REFUSE the lie that I need more self-control manufactured by my willpower. IT IS WRITTEN that self-control is the FRUIT of the SPIRIT, not the fruit of my striving. I am a BRANCH connected to the VINE, and apart from Jesus I can do NOTHING - but IN Him, fruit is AUTOMATIC. My job is ABIDING, not white-knuckling. IT IS WRITTEN that when I draw near to God, He draws near to me. As I stay connected to Jesus, the Holy Spirit produces self-control naturally, effortlessly, as I REST in the Vine. I am not defined by past binges or future fears - I am defined by my UNION with Christ, and His life flows through me NOW.
Father isn't standing over you with a clipboard tracking your failures. He's running toward you with LIVING WATER that satisfies the thirst you've been trying to fill with food, offering connection that produces what all your striving couldn't.
