"If God really loved the church, it wouldn't be this broken and corrupt."
How it sounds in your head: You've seen the financial scandals, the abuse cover-ups, the power plays masked as 'God's will.' If this is His bride, He has terrible taste. The institutional church is so far from what you read in Acts that it feels like a different religion, and you're questioning whether God is even in it anymore.
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it."
-- Matthew 16:18Source: idealization of the church that doesn't account for human free will combined with exposure to real institutional evil that creates disillusionment with the entire concept of organized faith.
The headlines are undeniable. The abuse reports. The financial corruption. The political maneuvering. The gap between 'what it should be' and 'what it is' feels too wide to be God-ordained, so either He's not real or He's not involved.
Divided into factions, tolerating sexual immorality worse than pagans (man sleeping with his father's wife), suing each other in public courts, getting drunk at communion, denying the resurrection - an absolute disaster. Yet Paul opened his letter calling them 'sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints.' They were a mess AND they were His. God didn't abandon them - He sent correction because they were worth fighting for.
I REFUSE the lie that the church's brokenness proves God's absence. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus is building His church and hell cannot prevail against it. The mess is real, but so is His promise. I am part of the church - the PEOPLE, not the institution - and I am Abraham's seed, blessed by covenant. IT IS WRITTEN that He will present it without spot or wrinkle, and He's not done working. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and I don't base my faith on human performance. Like the Corinthians, we can be a mess AND be His. The Father is refining, not abandoning.
The Father knows the church has wounded you with its brokenness. He's not defending the corruption - He's inviting you to be part of the HEALING. Like the Prodigal, you don't have to wait for the institution to get it right before you come home to HIM. The party is happening, and you're invited regardless of what the organizational church is doing.
