"I wasted years being angry and bitter instead of grateful."
How it sounds in your head: You spent decades in resentment, bitterness, complaint. You poisoned good years with bad attitude. Those years of ingratitude are gone and you can't redo them with the right heart. You should have been thankful.
"Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."
-- Lamentations 3:22-23Religion's gratitude-as-requirement teaching - makes emotional state a performance metric.
You remember years of actual bitterness, real complaints, genuine anger. Those attitudes were real and did affect relationships and experiences. Time truly passed that way.
Jonah angry and bitter even AFTER God used him to save Nineveh - literally asked God to kill him in his sulking. God tenderly reasoned with him, showed compassion, never withdrew calling or blessing despite terrible attitude.
I REFUSE the lie that bitter years disqualify me from blessing. IT IS WRITTEN that His compassions are new every morning - not based on my attitude, but based on HIS FAITHFULNESS. God fed complaining Israel for 40 years without missing a day. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 2:4 that God's GOODNESS leads to repentance - not my repentance earning His goodness. He was kind to me DURING the bitter years, not after I fixed my attitude. The BARAK protected Jacob even while he was DECEIVING. Grace covers imperfect attitudes. I receive His new mercies NOW.
The Father wasn't withholding love waiting for you to be more grateful - He was patient with your pain, tender with your wounds. He's not grading your attitude; He's healing your heart.
