"I should honor my parents by staying in relationship, even though they're toxic and abusive."
How it sounds in your head: The Bible says honor your father and mother. But every time I see them, I come home shaking. My therapist says boundaries, but my church says reconciliation. I feel guilty protecting myself and guilty exposing my kids to them. I can't win.
"For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ."
-- Galatians 1:10Religious misuse of 'honor' to guilt believers into tolerating abuse and erasing boundaries.
Scripture commands honor, and leaving or limiting contact feels like disobedience. Church culture often elevates 'family reconciliation' over safety.
King Saul (father figure/authority) tried to KILL David multiple times. David didn't 'reconcile and submit'—he RAN. He fled for his life, set boundaries, and refused to return to abuse. God blessed him and made him king. Safety was NOT dishonoring.
I REFUSE the lie that honoring my parents means tolerating abuse. IT IS WRITTEN that if I seek to please men over God, I am not a bondservant of Christ. I honor God FIRST by protecting myself and my children. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the TEMPLE of the Holy Spirit—abuse defiles that temple, and I will NOT allow it. Boundaries are NOT dishonoring—they are GODLY. I am led by the Spirit, not guilt. I am FREE to protect what God has entrusted to me.
The Father is NOT asking you to sacrifice your well-being or your children's safety to appease abusive parents. He is your DEFENDER, and He does not call you into harm. He is giving you permission to set boundaries, to protect, to step back—and He calls that WISDOM, not dishonor.
