"I should honor my parents by never speaking honestly about the harm they caused."
How it sounds in your head: The Bible says honor your father and mother. If I tell the truth about what happened, I'm dishonoring them. Good Christians protect their parents' reputation, even if it means carrying the secret. Speaking truth feels like betrayal.
"But, speaking the truth in love, we may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ."
-- Ephesians 4:15Religion weaponizing Exodus 20:12 to enforce silence, making 'honor' mean 'cover up' instead of 'tell truth with grace.'
The church taught him that honoring parents means never saying anything negative. Dysfunction stayed hidden in his childhood home under the banner of 'respect.' Truth-telling feels like violating sacred command.
Confronted King David directly: 'You are the man!' Spoke truth about David's adultery and murder to his FACE. God sent him to speak that truth—it was honoring to God, honoring to David's potential, even though it exposed sin.
I REFUSE the lie that honor requires silence about harm. IT IS WRITTEN that I speak the truth in love, and truth-telling IS loving. Honor is not pretending. Honor is acknowledging reality while refusing bitterness. IT IS WRITTEN in John 8:32 that the truth sets me free, and I choose freedom over false peace. The BARAK blessing includes freedom from deception—Abraham was blessed even when he told the TRUTH about Sarah actually being his sister. I honor my parents by being honest about our story while releasing them into God's hands. I honor myself by refusing to carry secrets that were never mine to keep. I am not dishonoring them by healing. I am honoring the God of truth who has made me free.
Your Father is not asking you to lie about your story to protect people who aren't even here anymore. He's inviting you to walk in the LIGHT, where healing happens. Truth isn't dishonor—it's the doorway to freedom He's been holding open.
