"I should have their respect by now but they talk back and I've lost all authority"
How it sounds in your head: Other parents' teenagers are respectful, compliant, honoring. Yours roll their eyes, argue with everything, treat you like you're stupid. You've failed to establish authority and now it's too late—you've lost them.
"And the child Samuel grew in stature, and in favor both with the LORD and men."
-- 1 Samuel 2:26Religious teaching about parenting authority as something you earn through perfect consistency, plus cultural messaging that rebellion means parenting failure.
The disrespect is real and constant. They challenge everything you say. The pushback feels like evidence that you failed to establish proper boundaries early on.
Esau wanted to MURDER Jacob and they were estranged for decades because of Jacob's deception. Yet when they reunited, Esau RAN to Jacob, embraced him, kissed him and they WEPT—INSTANT RECONCILIATION after years of hatred with no therapy or process, just God's timing.
I REFUSE the lie that I've permanently lost authority with my teenagers. IT IS WRITTEN that Samuel GREW in favor with God and men—growth is a PROCESS, not a verdict. My teen's current disrespect is not their permanent state. IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 22:6 that if I train them in the way they should go, when they are OLD they will not depart—it doesn't say 'when they're 16.' I am under the BARAK blessing—my children are blessed and will return to honor. God is working in them even through the rebellion. I declare INSTANT BREAKTHROUGH in our relationship like Esau and Jacob—years of conflict resolved in one embrace when God's timing comes.
The Father isn't disappointed in your parenting because your teen is disrespectful—He's already preparing their future testimony of 'I'm sorry, Mom' and full reconciliation. He sees the end from the beginning.
