"I didn't model healthy marriage and now they don't know what love looks like."
How it sounds in your head: They watched me stay in dysfunction, or watched me divorce, or saw the conflict and coldness. I didn't show them what a healthy relationship looks like. Now they're repeating patterns or avoiding commitment entirely because I didn't give them a template for real love.
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
-- Jeremiah 29:11Enemy lie that children's relationship capacity is determined solely by parents' marriage example, removing God's sovereignty and children's individual journey.
Your marriage was/is imperfect, and you can see echoes of your dynamics in their relationship struggles. The pop psychology that 'we marry what we know' feels validated by their choices.
God told Hosea to marry a prostitute, and they had children who grew up watching their mother repeatedly leave to return to prostitution - the most dysfunctional marriage model imaginable, used by God as a living object lesson. Yet God declared over those children born into that mess: 'You are sons of the living God' (Hosea 1:10). Their parents' broken marriage didn't define their identity or future.
I REFUSE the lie that my imperfect marriage destroyed my children's capacity for healthy love. IT IS WRITTEN that God has plans for them - thoughts of peace and a future - that don't depend on me modeling marriage perfectly. The FATHER is their example of perfect love. I am a daughter of the King, not condemned by my marriage struggles. IT IS WRITTEN that He works ALL things for good. God is teaching my children what real love looks like through HIS relentless pursuit of them.
The Father is running toward your children to show them what PERFECT LOVE looks like - not waiting for you to have modeled it correctly first. He's embracing them with the love that casts out fear, whispering, 'Let ME show you what real love is,' while you're still apologizing for what they witnessed in your marriage.
