"I should have known better - this is punishment for my financial foolishness."
How it sounds in your head: I ignored the red flags. I made risky decisions. I didn't listen to wisdom. This debt is what I deserve for being financially irresponsible. God is teaching me a painful lesson.
"Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."
-- Lamentations 3:22-23Religious teaching that consequences are God's punishment and suffering is His teaching method.
He CAN trace bad decisions that led here, and sermons taught 'you reap what you sow' as divine discipline for foolishness.
Jacob lied, deceived his father, stole his brother's blessing through fraud - objectively foolish and wrong. God appeared to him and said 'I am WITH you and will KEEP you wherever you go' - blessing despite the bad decision.
I REFUSE the lie that debt is God's punishment for my foolishness. IT IS WRITTEN that His mercies are new EVERY MORNING - not after I learn my lesson but TODAY. Jacob deceived and God promised to KEEP him. Abraham lied and God made him RICHER. The BARAK blessing wasn't withdrawn because of bad decisions - it was COVENANT, not behavior-based. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ. Jesus took the punishment; I receive the mercy. God isn't teaching me through suffering - He's drawing me close through GRACE.
Your Father isn't using debt as a teaching rod. He's the one who blessed Jacob after he lied, who enriched Abraham after he deceived, who runs toward prodigals with robes. His response to your foolishness is fresh mercy EVERY MORNING because that's just who He is.
