"I should have died instead; I'm taking up space that someone younger deserves"
How it sounds in your head: My husband died first. Or my child died and I'm still here. It feels wrong. Backward. I should have gone first. What's the point of me being here? I'm just taking resources—medical care, food, space—that someone with more life ahead of them should have. The world would be better if I'd gone instead.
"Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them."
-- Psalm 139:16Enemy using survivor's guilt and culture's devaluation of elderly to suggest her life is less valuable than others'
She watches younger people die while she lives on with constant medical needs. Culture's subtle (and not-so-subtle) message that elderly lives are less valuable makes her feel guilty for surviving, for needing care, for still being here.
Elderly man who'd been waiting years, probably decades, for the Messiah—told by the Holy Spirit he wouldn't die until he saw Christ. Could have felt he was taking up space, outliving his usefulness. Instead, God kept him alive specifically to be among the first to hold the Messiah, to prophesy over Him, to complete his divine assignment—proving every day God keeps someone alive has purpose.
I REFUSE the lie that I should have died instead or that I'm wasting space. IT IS WRITTEN that ALL my days were ordained before one of them came to be—God wrote every day of my life, including today, and He doesn't make mistakes. I am NOT here by accident. I am NOT taking someone else's spot. IT IS WRITTEN that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, that God's plans for me are for good and not evil, to give me a FUTURE and a HOPE—even now, even at this age. Like Simeon kept alive specifically to see the Messiah, I am here because God has purpose for every breath He gives me. My life has VALUE—not because of what I contribute, but because I am His beloved daughter, and He wants me here. I am a BLESSING, not a burden. I am LOVED, not leftover.
Your Father isn't keeping you alive out of some cosmic oversight while wishing you'd go ahead and die—He's intentionally sustaining every breath because He delights in you, because your days are authored by Him with purpose, because His joy over you doesn't diminish with age. Every morning you wake is His active choice to say 'I still want you here,' and He's running toward you with that message, not away from you in regret.
