"I should downsize and give everything away before I die."
How it sounds in your head: All the sermons about rich fools dying with full barns haunt me. I feel guilty keeping anything nice when I could give it away. Shouldn't I die with nothing to prove I wasn't materialistic?
"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous."
-- Proverbs 13:22Source: Religious misinterpretation of Jesus' parable, turning generosity into mandatory poverty to prove spirituality.
She's heard the rich fool parable weaponized to shame anyone with savings or possessions. Dying with anything feels like failing the spirituality test.
After everything he lost, God gave Job TWICE as much as before—14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 oxen, 1,000 donkeys. Job died OLD, FULL OF DAYS, and WEALTHY. God's final blessing was ABUNDANCE, not poverty.
I REFUSE the lie that dying with possessions means I'm materialistic. IT IS WRITTEN that a GOOD person leaves an inheritance to children's children—wealth isn't evil, misplaced trust is. Job died WEALTHY and full of days. Abraham died WEALTHY and blessed in all things. The BARAK blessing includes being the HEAD and not the TAIL, ABOVE and not BENEATH—even in my final season. IT IS WRITTEN that God gives me richly ALL THINGS to ENJOY. I reject the religious pressure to prove my spirituality through poverty. I'm generous because I'm BLESSED, not broke.
Your Father isn't asking you to die broke to prove you love Him. He's the Father who loaded the Israelites with Egyptian gold on their way OUT—He blesses the EXIT as much as the entrance. Keep what brings you comfort and joy. You're His beloved daughter, not a martyr proving your worth.
