"I should be able to overcome this through willpower and discipline."
How it sounds in your head: You're not trying hard enough. Others push through pain. You're being lazy, giving in too easily. Mind over matter. If you really wanted to, you'd power through like you used to.
"So he answered and said to me: 'This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.'"
-- Zechariah 4:6Source: Self-reliance gospel that makes you the savior instead of Jesus, putting outcomes on your bootstraps instead of His finished work.
A lifetime of pushing through confirms it—you've overcome before through sheer grit. Every small surrender to limitation feels like weakness you should be able to conquer.
Peter did the impossible—walked on water—while his eyes were on JESUS. The moment he relied on himself and looked at circumstances, he sank. His ability wasn't in his willpower but in his connection to Christ.
I REFUSE the lie that willpower is the answer. IT IS WRITTEN that it's not by might nor by power but by God's SPIRIT. I am a BRANCH, not the vine—my job is to ABIDE, not produce through effort. John 15:5 says apart from Jesus I can do NOTHING, and that includes overcoming disability through grit. IT IS WRITTEN in Philippians 2:13 that it is GOD who works in me both to WILL and to DO His good pleasure—even the desire and ability come from HIM, not me. I am covered by the BARAK blessing that never required Abraham's effort, only his faith in covenant. My strength is in surrender, not striving.
The Father isn't waiting for you to muster more willpower—He's inviting you to rest in HIS power. He's not impressed by your effort; He's moved by your dependence. Stop trying to BE strong and let Him BE your strength.
