"I never really earned what I was paid - I just got away with it longer than most."
How it sounds in your head: Others worked harder. Others were smarter. Others deserved their compensation. You were overpaid for underdelivering. You coasted on personality and managed not to get caught.
"But he answered one of them and said, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?'"
-- Matthew 20:13-15Religious teaching that worth must be earned through works, combined with poverty mindset that receiving more than you 'deserve' is theft.
You can always find someone who worked harder or achieved more, making your compensation feel disproportionate. The voice says receiving more than you earned is guilt, not grace.
Workers hired at 5pm worked ONE HOUR and got FULL DAY'S PAY. Those who worked all day protested. The owner said 'I'm generous - is that a problem?' Grace pays equal regardless of hours worked.
I REFUSE the lie that I never earned what I was paid. IT IS WRITTEN that the landowner pays based on his generosity, not workers' hours. My compensation was Father's goodness, not my worthiness. The BARAK blessing of Abraham gives me wealth I didn't earn - that's COVENANT, not theft. IT IS WRITTEN that God gives me power to get wealth. I wasn't 'getting away with' being overpaid - I was RECEIVING the generosity of a good Father. Grace pays more than performance deserves.
Father sees you like the landowner saw the one-hour workers - His generosity toward you is about HIS goodness, not your hours. He delights in paying you more than you 'earned' because that's who He is.
