"I dread retirement because without my title, everyone will see I was never that impressive to begin with."
How it sounds in your head: The job gave you credibility. The role gave you respect. Strip away the title and what's left? Just an ordinary guy who happened to have a good business card. Retirement removes the costume.
"And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, 'Abba, Father!' Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."
-- Galatians 4:6-7Identity rooted in position rather than sonship—who you ARE versus what you DO.
His entire adult identity has been fused with his role. Retirement feels like losing the proof of his worth, leaving only the 'ordinary' self he's always feared he was.
John's ministry decreased, Jesus' increased—John called it JOY because his identity wasn't his platform. He knew who he was APART from the role.
I REFUSE the lie that my worth is tied to my title. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a SON and an HEIR—not a function, not a role. My identity is rooted in relationship with the Father, not in a business card. Retirement is transition, not diminishment. IT IS WRITTEN in Isaiah 46:4—even to old age, He carries me; even to gray hairs, He will sustain me. I am blessed with the BARAK—favor in every season, value that never depreciates, identity that NEVER retires.
The Father didn't love you more when you had the corner office. He ran to the prodigal when he had NOTHING—no title, no resume, just stench and shame. Sonship isn't earned by production.
