"I need to punish myself appropriately before I can move forward."
How it sounds in your head: You can't just walk away from what you did without consequences. Self-imposed suffering is the least you can do—staying miserable, denying yourself joy, keeping the wound open. It would be insulting to those you hurt to just 'get over it' and be happy.
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed."
-- Isaiah 53:5Source: Religious works-righteousness that turns self-flagellation into a virtue, making your suffering a required payment on top of what Christ already paid in full.
You see the pain you caused others—your wife's tears, your kids' confusion, employees who lost jobs. Moving into joy while they're still suffering feels morally wrong, like you're getting away with something.
A criminal dying for his crimes, with zero time to make amends, pay restitution, or prove change, simply said 'Remember me' and Jesus responded 'TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise.' No punishment required, no penance extracted—instant, complete forgiveness and eternal security in one sentence.
I REFUSE the lie that Christ's punishment needs my punishment added to it. IT IS WRITTEN that the chastisement for MY peace was on HIM—past tense, finished, complete. My self-imposed suffering doesn't honor the cross; it insults it by declaring it inadequate. IT IS WRITTEN that He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree—not 'most of them' or 'pending your contribution.' I am free from punishment NOW because He took it ALL. The blessing of Abraham is mine by His blood, not by my penance.
The Father isn't impressed by your self-punishment—He's grieved by it. He already punished sin at the cross, and watching you re-punish yourself is like watching you spit on the sacrifice He made to set you free.
