"I have to prove I've changed before I can stop hating myself."
How it sounds in your head: If I forgive myself now, what's to stop me from doing it again? I need to show a track record. Prove I'm different. Earn the right to let go of the guilt. Once I've proven I'm really changed, then maybe I can breathe again.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
-- Ephesians 2:8-10Religion taught her identity follows behavior instead of the Gospel truth that behavior flows from identity in Christ.
Every motivational account and self-improvement guru says 'show, don't tell' and 'actions speak louder than words.' She's applied performance-based acceptance to God's unconditional love.
Zacchaeus was a corrupt tax collector who cheated people for years. Jesus invited Himself to Zacchaeus's house before Zacchaeus changed anything. That same day, Zacchaeus repaid fourfold and Jesus declared 'Today salvation has come to this house.' Jesus didn't wait for proof of change—His presence produced it instantly.
I REFUSE the lie that I must prove I've changed before I can receive grace. IT IS WRITTEN that I am saved by grace through faith, not by works. I was created in Christ Jesus for good works God already prepared—I don't earn my identity, I walk in it. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 5:8 that God demonstrated His love for me in that while I was STILL A SINNER, Christ died for me. He didn't wait for proof. I am BARAK blessed, covered by the covenant that loved Jacob the deceiver BEFORE he wrestled with God. My identity is GIFT, and transformation flows from that truth, not toward it.
The Father didn't wait for you to clean up before He called you His own. He's not waiting for you to prove anything. He's already convinced. The moment you said yes, He said 'MINE,' and nothing you do or don't do changes that fact.
