"I need to hit rock bottom before I can truly recover."
How it sounds in your head: I've heard that you don't really change until you've lost everything. Maybe I haven't suffered enough yet. Maybe I need to go lower before God can lift me up.
"He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps."
-- Psalm 40:2Source: recovery folklore that glorifies suffering as prerequisite instead of recognizing grace meets you WHEREVER you are.
He hears dramatic testimonies of people who lost jobs, families, and homes before getting clean, making his current struggle feel 'not bad enough' to warrant real intervention. It creates a twisted incentive to wait for disaster.
Zacchaeus was a wealthy, powerful tax collector—nowhere NEAR 'rock bottom.' Jesus called him down from the tree THAT DAY, and Zacchaeus was instantly transformed, giving half his wealth away and repaying fourfold. No disaster required—just an encounter with grace.
I REFUSE the lie that I need to suffer more to deserve rescue. IT IS WRITTEN that the GOODNESS of God leads me to repentance—not disaster, GOODNESS. IT IS WRITTEN that He lifts me OUT of the pit; He doesn't wait for me to sink lower. The Father is running toward me NOW, not waiting for me to lose everything. The BARAK blessing met Abraham while he was RICH, not after he was ruined. Grace meets me where I AM, and transformation is available THIS MOMENT.
The Father isn't waiting for you to fall further so the rescue looks more dramatic. He's reaching for you RIGHT NOW, whether you're at 'rock bottom' or just starting to slip. His goodness is the magnet drawing you home, not your disaster.
