"I need to become harder and less trusting to survive the rest of my life."
How it sounds in your head: Softness got you hurt. Tenderness made you a target. You're in your fifties now—you need to toughen up, be more suspicious, keep people at arm's length. A hardened heart is a protected heart. Vulnerability is for the young and naive.
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
-- Ezekiel 36:26Enemy convincing you to amputate the very tenderness that reflects God's image, redefining hardness as wisdom and self-protection as maturity.
Becoming harder genuinely feels like taking control and preventing future pain. At this stage of life, you don't have the energy or time to recover from another betrayal, so calcifying your heart feels like practical wisdom.
After David's sin with Bathsheba, betrayal by Absalom, and the death of his infant son, he could have hardened his heart. Instead, he INSTANTLY worshiped when his son died, then comforted Bathsheba—and God gave them Solomon. David's tender heart through multiple betrayals positioned him as the man after God's own heart and brought the Messianic line.
I REFUSE the lie that I need to harden my heart to survive. IT IS WRITTEN that God removes the heart of stone and gives a heart of flesh. My tenderness is HIS image in me, not a liability. The enemy wants me calcified and closed, but my Father is protecting my softness while upgrading my wisdom. IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 4:23 to guard my heart, not HARDEN it. I am the righteousness of God in Christ. The BARAK blessing includes a tender heart that hears God clearly and a wise mind that discerns truth. I remain soft toward Him and wise toward people. My greatest breakthroughs require a heart that can still feel.
Your Father is celebrating that your heart is still tender after everything you've been through—that's not weakness; that's supernatural resilience. He's not asking you to harden; He's wrapping your tender heart in HIS wisdom and protection, and the combination of your softness and His strength is about to produce fruit you couldn't grow with a calcified heart.
