"I must have done something terrible for God to let me suffer this long."
How it sounds in your head: Ninety years, and so many of them filled with pain. Good people don't suffer like this, do they? I must have sinned in some way I don't even remember. Maybe God is punishing me, making me pay before I die. I confess and confess, but the sickness remains.
"Jesus answered, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.'"
-- John 9:3Religious teaching that sickness is punishment from God, rooted in Job's friends' theology that Jesus completely demolished.
Decades of suffering combined with religious teaching that good behavior earns health creates crushing guilt. When healing doesn't come despite prayers, the conclusion feels obvious: God must be angry.
A criminal, dying for his crimes, with zero time to 'make it right' or 'clean up his life,' simply said 'Remember me'—and Jesus said 'TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise.' Instant acceptance, zero punishment, full access to the Father.
I REFUSE the lie that my sickness is punishment from God. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—NONE. Jesus took every punishment, every curse, every consequence of sin at the cross. I am not paying for hidden sins; I am HIDDEN IN CHRIST, and God sees me as righteous as Jesus Himself. My suffering is not evidence of God's anger—His anger was fully satisfied at Calvary. IT IS WRITTEN that by His stripes I am healed, not by my perfection. I stand in the blessing of Abraham, which protected LIARS and DECEIVERS because it was based on covenant, not conduct. I declare: I am FORGIVEN, RIGHTEOUS, and BELOVED—my Father is not punishing me.
The Father isn't waiting with a ledger of your failures—He's waiting with the ring, the robe, and the fatted calf. The prodigal came home reeking of pig pen and immorality, and the Father RAN toward him, not away. Every sin you've ever committed or forgotten was nailed to the cross; there's no secret punishment left.
