"I have to forgive my mom to move forward with my life."
How it sounds in your head: Everyone at church says I need to forgive her before God will bless me. But every time I think about what she did—or didn't do—the anger comes back. I feel stuck until I can somehow force myself to mean it.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religion weaponizing forgiveness as a WORK required to earn freedom, blocking the revelation that Christ ALREADY freed you.
You've heard it from every pulpit and counselor: 'Unforgiveness is a prison.' The pain is real and ongoing, so it feels like proof you haven't forgiven enough yet.
Brothers sold him into slavery, he spent years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, lost his entire youth to their betrayal. He didn't 'work on forgiveness'—when he saw them again, he WEPT, blessed them, and said 'You meant evil, but God meant it for good.' Freedom was instant because God had already been working.
I REFUSE the lie that I must manufacture forgiveness to earn God's blessing. IT IS WRITTEN that God has ALREADY forgiven me ALL trespasses and nailed every debt to the cross. I don't forgive to GET free; I forgive FROM freedom. My mom's failures don't hold my future hostage—Christ already paid that debt. IT IS WRITTEN in Ephesians 4:32 that I forgive as God in Christ forgave me—and He forgave me BEFORE I asked, BEFORE I deserved it, BEFORE I cleaned up. I release her into God's hands not as a work I must do, but as a gift I GET to give because I'm already FREE.
The Father isn't holding your breakthrough hostage until you can emotionally forgive your mom. He's already blessed you, already freed you, and He's gently inviting you to release the bitterness—not to earn anything, but because carrying it hurts YOU, and He loves you too much to watch you drink poison.
