"I should honor my toxic parents because the Bible commands it, even though they're still destroying me."
How it sounds in your head: Every pastor quotes 'Honor your father and mother.' Your Christian friends say you need to forgive and maintain relationship. But every phone call leaves you gutted, every visit reopens wounds, every family gathering is a battlefield. You're trapped between God's command and your own survival.
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."
-- Galatians 5:1Religious weaponization of Scripture, twisting Old Covenant law into New Covenant bondage, making you responsible for their behavior.
It's literally in the Ten Commandments. Exodus 20:12. Your small group studied it. The marriage book said lack of honor blocks blessings. They're your parents—shouldn't you keep trying?
Had to flee from King Saul, his father-in-law who repeatedly tried to kill him. David didn't keep 'honoring' by staying in spear range. He established distance, protected himself, and STILL called Saul 'the Lord's anointed.' Boundaries didn't equal dishonor. God blessed David's escape and made him king.
I REFUSE the lie that honoring parents means accepting ongoing abuse or toxicity. IT IS WRITTEN: Christ has made me FREE, and I will not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. I can honor the position without enabling the poison. I am not responsible for their choices, and setting boundaries is WISDOM, not sin. IT IS WRITTEN: There is NO CONDEMNATION for those in Christ Jesus. The Father doesn't require me to sacrifice my family, my peace, or my sanity to prove my obedience. I honor God FIRST, and He blesses me with the BARAK blessing—protected even when I make hard decisions.
The Father isn't standing with arms crossed demanding you endure more damage to prove your spirituality. He's the one who told you to flee danger (Matthew 10:23). Right now, He's giving you PERMISSION to protect yourself and your family, and He's not withholding blessing because you set boundaries. He's actually proud of you for valuing what He values—life, peace, freedom.
