"I got a DUI. I'm an alcoholic failure who put lives at risk. I'll never escape this."
How it sounds in your head: You drove drunk. You could have killed someone. The mugshot, the arrest, the court dates, the interlock device - constant reminders you're a screw-up. Everyone knows. Your family is embarrassed. You're that guy now.
"Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more."
-- Romans 5:20Source: Shame and legal system that turns one terrible decision into permanent identity marker, denying the transforming power of grace.
The legal consequences are real and ongoing. You endangered people. The shame every time you see the restricted license. You DID do something genuinely dangerous and stupid.
Noah got so drunk he passed out naked in his tent - AFTER being the man God chose to save humanity and restart the world. This wasn't a youthful mistake; it was AFTER his great assignment. Yet Hebrews 11:7 calls him an 'heir of the righteousness which is according to faith' with zero mention of his drunken failure - God's record of him contains only his FAITH, not his failure.
I REFUSE the lie that a DUI makes me a permanent failure. IT IS WRITTEN that where sin abounded, grace abounded MUCH MORE. Noah got drunk and naked AFTER saving humanity and is still called RIGHTEOUS. I am not my mugshot - I am HIS righteousness. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ. Legal consequences are temporary, but my identity in Christ is ETERNAL. I am under the BARAK blessing, and the same covenant that kept Noah in righteousness despite drunkenness keeps me. I am CLEANSED, not condemned.
The Father doesn't keep a mugshot of you - He keeps a picture of you in the ROBE He gave you while you still smelled like the pig pen. Noah's drunken failure didn't make the final record; only his FAITH did, because God doesn't define you by your worst moment, He defines you by the BLOOD.
