"My mental health history makes me too broken for God to really use."
How it sounds in your head: Depression, anxiety, maybe a psychiatric hospitalization—you're damaged goods. Ministry is for the stable ones. Sure, God loves you, but actually USING you? That's for people who don't need medication, who don't have 'episodes,' who aren't one trigger away from falling apart.
"And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
-- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10Source: Religion separates 'whole' believers from 'broken' ones; church culture silences mental health struggles, creating hierarchy where stability equals spirituality.
She's heard the whispered prayers about 'deliverance' when she mentioned her therapist. She's watched 'stronger' women lead while she sits in the back, wondering if her prescription bottle disqualifies her from the microphone. The theology of 'take every thought captive' felt like condemnation when her brain chemistry was the enemy.
After the greatest victory of his ministry (defeating 450 prophets of Baal), Elijah crashed into suicidal depression, ran into the wilderness, and begged God to let him die. God's response: feed him, let him rest, and send him BACK to ministry with greater assignments—no condemnation, no 'you need to heal first,' instant restoration to purpose.
I REFUSE the lie that my mental health history disqualifies me from being used by God. IT IS WRITTEN that His STRENGTH is made PERFECT in my weakness, and He CHOOSES the weak to shame the strong. I am not too broken—I am the EXACT kind of broken God uses to display His power. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 34:18 that the Lord is NEAR to the brokenhearted and SAVES those who are crushed in spirit. My depression doesn't disqualify me; it positions me for NEARNESS to God. Elijah was suicidal after his greatest victory, and God sent him back to ministry IMMEDIATELY. The BARAK blessing covers my mind, my emotions, my mental health—I am BLESSED in the city and in the field, coming in and going out, in EVERY area, including this one.
The Father doesn't look at your psychiatric history and bench you—He looks at your weakness and says, 'PERFECT. Now My strength can shine through.' He didn't heal Elijah's depression and then send him back; He fed him, rested him, and recommissioned him IN his weakness because that's where grace is most visible.
