"I divorced and remarried. Jesus said that's adultery. I'm living in ongoing sin, so God can't forgive me."
How it sounds in your head: Jesus was crystal clear: whoever divorces and remarries commits adultery. I've been married to my second wife for thirty years. If it's ongoing adultery, I'm in continuous sin every day. How can God forgive sin I'm still committing?
"For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man."
-- Romans 7:2-3Source: Religion misapplying Jesus's teaching on divorce to create perpetual condemnation instead of recognizing covenant realities under grace.
Jesus's words in the Gospels seem unambiguous, and thirty years of a second marriage creates the impossible scenario of either abandoning a current spouse or living in 'perpetual adultery.' The logic trap feels airtight—ongoing sin can't be forgiven while you're still in it.
The Samaritan woman had five husbands and was currently living with a man not her husband—six ongoing sexual relationships. Jesus's response wasn't condemnation or demand to leave the sixth man. He offered her LIVING WATER, made her the first evangelist to a Samaritan city, and NEVER mentioned her relationship status as a barrier to receiving from Him.
I REFUSE the lie that my remarriage is ongoing adultery! IT IS WRITTEN: I DIED with Christ—the old covenant person is DEAD, and the law has no claim on a dead person. The woman at the well had SIX relationships, and Jesus made her the first evangelist without fixing her situation! IT IS WRITTEN: I am a NEW CREATION; old things PASSED AWAY. I'm not under law but under GRACE. The BARAK blessing covers my marital history just like it covered Jacob's deception and David's adultery. I am RIGHTEOUS, FORGIVEN, and fully accepted RIGHT NOW!
Jesus doesn't see your marriage history as a legal barrier—He sees you as a new creation, blood-bought and righteous, and your current marriage is holy because YOU are holy in Him. The past is buried in baptism, and the present is covered in blood.
