"I can't tell anyone at church I'm seeing a therapist or they'll think I'm not trusting God."
How it sounds in your head: Small group would judge me if they knew I pay someone to listen to my problems instead of just praying more. They'll think I'm worldly for using 'secular psychology' instead of biblical counseling. Better to keep this secret.
"Jesus answered and said to them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.'"
-- Luke 5:31Religious culture that frames therapy as unspiritual, positioning professional mental health care as competing with God instead of complementing His provision.
She's heard the comments about people 'needing Jesus, not a therapist' and seen the side-eye when psychology is mentioned. The church's emphasis on prayer and Scripture feels like an either-or ultimatum with professional help.
Luke was a PHYSICIAN who traveled with Paul on missionary journeys and wrote two books of the Bible. Paul never told him to quit medicine and 'just pray for people' - he valued Luke's medical expertise as a gift from God that worked alongside spiritual ministry.
I REFUSE the lie that therapy competes with God. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus affirmed sick people need physicians - my mental health deserves the same care as my physical health. Luke was a doctor AND wrote Scripture; medicine and faith aren't enemies. IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 11:14 that safety comes from multiple counselors. My therapist is part of God's provision for my healing, not a replacement for Him. The BARAK blessing includes wisdom to seek help - Abraham had advisors, Moses had Jethro's counsel. I am righteous, wise, and covered whether I process trauma on a couch or in a prayer closet or BOTH.
The Father sees you sitting in that therapist's waiting room, feeling guilty for being there, and He's smiling with approval - not disappointment. He provided that counselor as a gift, like He provided Luke the physician to Paul, saying 'I'm not threatened by you getting help, daughter. Use every resource I've given you.'
