"I can never remarry. I'm stuck alone because God only permits remarriage if my ex committed adultery, and I can't prove that."
How it sounds in your head: I've read all the theologians. Matthew 19 is clear—adultery is the only exception. My marriage ended for other reasons, so I'm bound to be alone forever. If I remarry, I'm living in ongoing adultery according to some pastors. I'm 27, staring down decades of loneliness because I failed once. Dating feels like preparing to sin.
"But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace."
-- 1 Corinthians 7:15Legalistic interpretation of Matthew 19 without considering full counsel of grace, freedom in Christ, and New Covenant realities.
Respected pastors teach this. Commentaries support it. You don't want to be 'that guy' who ignores Scripture to justify what he wants. The fear of displeasing God by remarrying feels more righteous than the loneliness. Some churches won't marry divorced people without extensive proof and waiting periods. The shame spiral makes you feel like you don't DESERVE love again anyway.
Jesus told her she'd had five husbands and was currently with a non-husband—yet He offered her living water and revealed Himself as Messiah to HER first. No condemnation, no 'you must stay single,' no discussion of which divorces were 'biblical.' Just grace, truth, and calling.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm bound to loneliness forever. IT IS WRITTEN that if the unbeliever departs, I am NOT UNDER BONDAGE—God has called me to PEACE. I am under GRACE, not law. The Samaritan woman had FIVE failed marriages and Jesus called her to ministry, not perpetual singleness. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ has made me FREE—I will not be entangled with yokes of religious bondage. I am free to love again, free to marry again, free to move forward. The BARAK blessing includes being blessed in my relationships, my future, my household. I stand in GRACE. My future is not determined by my past.
The Father is not holding your failed marriage over your head like a weapon to keep you isolated. He's preparing your heart for healthy love again, in HIS timing, without religious hoops. He sees your loneliness and calls it 'not good'—just like He did with Adam. You're not punished. You're being prepared.
