"I am 'a diabetic,' 'a cancer survivor,' 'an arthritis patient'—this disease defines who I am now."
How it sounds in your head: You introduce yourself by your diagnosis now. At the doctor's office, you're a case number. In your Bible study, you're 'the one with the health issues.' Your illness has become your identity, your story, your label. You've forgotten who you were before the diagnosis.
"The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You shall be called by a NEW NAME, which the mouth of the LORD will name."
-- Isaiah 62:2Source: Medical system reducing people to diagnoses + enemy stealing identity through labels.
Every doctor's appointment reinforces the label. Every pill bottle has your disease printed on it. The medical community literally calls you 'a diabetic' instead of 'a person with diabetes,' embedding the illness into your very identity. After years of managing symptoms, it feels like this IS who you are.
For 12 YEARS she was known as 'the bleeding woman'—society defined her by her disease, made her ceremonially unclean, isolated her. One touch of Jesus and IMMEDIATELY the fountain of blood dried up—she went from 'hemorrhaging woman' to 'Daughter' (Jesus's only use of that term), identity completely transformed in one moment.
I REFUSE the lie that my diagnosis defines me. IT IS WRITTEN that I shall be called by a NEW NAME which the mouth of the LORD will name—and He does NOT call me by my disease. I am not 'a diabetic' or 'a patient'—I am RIGHTEOUS, BELOVED, HEALED by the stripes of Jesus. IT IS WRITTEN in Isaiah 53:5 that by His wounds I AM healed—present tense, finished work. The BARAK blessing of Abraham is mine through Christ—the blessing that brought Sarah a baby at 90, that strengthened Abraham's body when it was 'as good as dead.' I am a daughter of the King, and THAT is my identity.
The Father sees you running toward Him carrying your medical records and diagnoses, and He RUNS to meet you—ripping those labels off and clothing you in robes of righteousness before you can even explain your symptoms. He's already prepared the ring of authority and sandals of sonship, declaring 'THIS is My beloved daughter' while you still smell like hospital antiseptic.
