"Godly men endure pain without complaint. Taking pain medication shows I'm spiritually soft and weak."
How it sounds in your head: You survived wars, built a career, raised a family without whining. Now you need pills just to get through the day? Men of God bear their crosses. Your father worked through pain—what makes you special?
"Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those who are bitter of heart."
-- Proverbs 31:6Source: toxic masculinity merged with religious stoicism, teaching that suffering silently proves spiritual maturity and manhood.
Your entire generation was taught to 'walk it off' and never show weakness, especially as a man. Decades of church teaching equated suffering with sanctification, making pain relief feel like spiritual cowardice.
On the cross, they offered Jesus wine mixed with myrrh—a pain-dulling narcotic used in that era. Though He refused it to fully bear our sins consciously, the offer itself shows pain medication was acceptable and compassionate, not weakness.
I REFUSE the lie that pain proves manhood or godliness. IT IS WRITTEN that Scripture commands giving relief to those who suffer. Jesus Himself was offered pain medication on the cross. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, not because I endure pain but because of HIS finished work. My strength is in resting in His provision, not in stoic suffering. IT IS WRITTEN there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—none for taking medicine, none for relieving pain. I receive every good gift from above.
Your Father isn't impressed by your pain tolerance—He's moved by compassion for His son. He's RUNNING toward you with the robe of righteousness already secured, offering relief in His nail-scarred hands, celebrating every moment you're not suffering needlessly.
