"God is punishing me with this illness because I need to learn something."
How it sounds in your head: My chronic pain started after I made some bad choices. Maybe God is teaching me a lesson through this suffering. People say 'God won't give you more than you can handle,' so this must be His will for me right now.
"Jesus answered, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.'"
-- John 9:3Source: religion teaching that God authors sickness as discipline, making illness a moral lesson.
Well-meaning people keep saying 'God's teaching you something' or 'There's a reason for this.' Her pain feels like punishment because she's been taught God uses suffering to correct her.
The man was blind from birth—lifetime of disability. Disciples assumed it was sin (his or his parents'). Jesus said NO—it's not punishment, and then healed him INSTANTLY with mud and spit, demonstrating God's will is healing, not teaching through suffering.
I REFUSE the lie that my illness is God punishing me. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus said sickness is NOT from sin or punishment—it's an opportunity for God's works to be revealed. My chronic pain is what Jesus took to the cross for me, not what Father sent to teach me. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ redeemed me from the curse, and sickness IS the curse. I am Abraham's seed, blessed with health, and the BARAK covers my body completely. God is NOT mad at me—He's healing me.
Your Father isn't using sickness to teach you anything—He's heartbroken watching you suffer what Jesus already paid for. He's running toward you with healing in His hands, not lessons through pain, because He's a Father who gives good gifts, not a teacher who tortures students.
