"If I really trusted God, I wouldn't need antidepressants or anxiety medication."
How it sounds in your head: Everyone at youth group talks about 'just praying more' and my small group leader said medication is a 'crutch.' When I mentioned seeing a psychiatrist, someone quoted 'God hasn't given us a spirit of fear' like I'm choosing this. Now I feel like taking meds means I failed at faith.
"Jesus answered them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.'"
-- Luke 5:31Religious spirit teaching that physical/chemical help negates spiritual reality, making medical intervention equal lack of trust.
Church culture often presents an either/or between medicine and faith, making her feel she must choose. When she sees others 'overcome' without medication, she feels her need for it proves spiritual inadequacy.
Timothy had frequent stomach problems and physical ailments that affected his ministry. Paul didn't tell him to 'pray harder'—he prescribed WINE as medicine, showing that apostles themselves endorsed medical remedies without seeing it as spiritual failure.
I REFUSE the lie that medication means weak faith. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus validated physicians and Paul prescribed remedies. My brain chemistry doesn't determine my spiritual identity—I am RIGHTEOUS by His blood, whether I take medicine or not. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 103:3 that He forgives AND heals, using EVERY means He's given humanity—prayer, medicine, therapy, community. I receive ALL His provision without shame. The BARAK blessing over my life includes EVERY good gift, including medical science that comes from His wisdom given to researchers.
Your Father isn't standing with arms crossed waiting for you to 'trust harder.' He's the one who gave humans the INTELLIGENCE to create medication, and He celebrates every tool that brings you relief. He's not disappointed—He's running toward you with the prescription bottle saying 'I made this FOR you because I love you.'
