"God must be punishing me for trusting the wrong person - I should have known better."
How it sounds in your head: I've lived long enough to recognize red flags. I should have seen it coming. Maybe God allowed this betrayal because I was foolish or didn't pray enough about it. This is divine discipline for my poor judgment.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."
-- Romans 8:1Religion's teaching that suffering is always corrective and God orchestrates pain for our lessons.
Lifelong church teaching about reaping and sowing makes every pain feel like punishment, and age brings self-judgment for not being 'wiser' by now.
God told Hosea to marry Gomer knowing she would betray him with adultery. When she did, God didn't say 'you should have known better' - He told Hosea to BUY HER BACK and love her again, demonstrating that betrayal doesn't disqualify us from God's relentless love.
I REFUSE the lie that my pain is punishment from God. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation to those in Christ Jesus - and I stand condemned by NOTHING. The Father is not angry at me for trusting; He's angry at the enemy who weaponized my love. IT IS WRITTEN that God didn't send Jesus to condemn the world but to save it - and I am SAVED, not scolded. I am the righteousness of God in Christ. My judgment was perfect - it was the other person's character that failed, not my discernment. The Father is running toward me with the ring and robe RIGHT NOW, not waiting for me to 'learn my lesson.'
The Father isn't standing back saying 'I told you so.' He's standing in front of you taking the blows meant for you, saying 'This wasn't My plan for you - let Me turn it into testimony.' You didn't disappoint Him. You broke His heart BY being hurt, not BY trusting.
