"God is using this sickness to build my character."
How it sounds in your head: Adults keep saying 'this will make you stronger' and 'character is built through trials.' Maybe God gave me this disease because there's something wrong with my character that needs fixing. Maybe I'll be a better person on the other side of this sickness.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
-- James 1:17Source: World's self-improvement gospel mixed with religious language that makes God the author of disease for character development.
People you respect say it with confidence, and it's true that hard things reveal what you're made of—so it sounds like God orchestrates hard things. Suffering does change you, so calling it 'character building' sounds wise.
Blind from BIRTH, disciples asked 'who sinned—him or his parents—that he was born blind?' Jesus said NEITHER—'that the works of God should be revealed in him.' Then He HEALED him instantly. God's work wasn't the blindness; it was the HEALING that revealed God's character.
I REFUSE the lie that my Father authors disease to build my character. IT IS WRITTEN that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights with NO VARIATION—sickness is neither good nor perfect, so it's not from Him. My Father doesn't alternate between health and disease depending on what lesson I need; He sent Jesus to DESTROY the works of the devil, and sickness is the devil's work. IT IS WRITTEN that the man born blind wasn't blind because of sin but so God's works could be REVEALED—and God's work was HEALING, not the disease. My character is built by the Holy Spirit producing fruit in me as I abide in the Vine, not by disease eating my body. I am blessed with the BARAK that protected Abraham even when he LIED—my blessing isn't based on perfected character but on COVENANT. I receive healing NOW.
Your Father isn't giving you sickness to make you better—He gave you JESUS to make you whole. Character comes from abiding in the Vine, and the Vine produces health, not disease.
